Grisaille Techniques for Oil or Acrylic is one of a series of Creative Dip Workshops designed to be an introduction to the subject for artists of all levels of experience.
Workshop participants will Glaze over a Grisaille ('griz-EYE'.
A French word meaning Grey). It is an underpainting using a limited palette related to one color like gray. The underpainting is developed into a detailed, carefully rendered image with a full tonal range. It is sometimes called the dead layer because it has no colour.
Once completed, the grisaille is glazed with transparent layers of colour. This method of painting is also referred to as indirect painting. Meaning colours and values can be corrected throughout the painting process. Highlights and some values will need to be reinstated as the layers are glazed. As with other methods of glazing patience is needed between layers as they must be totally dry before the next glaze is applied.
There will be demonstrations of the techniques and time for some practice.
